In August 2018, amidst my maternal duties, I discovered a palpable lump during a routine self-examination. Initially attributing it to a potential clogged duct due to breastfeeding, the subsequent persistence of the lump prompted medical evaluation. Despite lacking familial history or predisposing genetic mutations, I received a Stage 2B Triple Positive Breast Cancer diagnosis on October 4th, 2018.
Treatment commenced with a regimen comprising chemotherapy, surgical intervention, and a five-year course of estrogen receptor modulator medication. I underwent five cycles of TCHP chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy with DIEP Flap Reconstruction in March, 2019. Pharmacological management initially involved Anastrozole; however, intolerable joint pain necessitated a transition to Tamoxifen. Completion of the five-year medication protocol culminated in a subsequent hysterectomy due to overarching health considerations.
Reaching the milestone of five years NED (no evidence of disease) on March 19, 2024, is a testament to my resilience and fortitude amidst adversity. Concurrently, the forthcoming attainment of an EdD in Adult Learning and Development on May 8th, 2024, reflects unwavering dedication and intellectual pursuit despite formidable personal challenges. Throughout this arduous journey, I emphasize the criticality of self-vigilance in breast health, urging individuals to prioritize regular self-examination as a fundamental defense mechanism against potential pathology.
